Five students are given detention one day after school for having phones in the classroom (despite the fact that they all insist it wasn’t their phone the teacher found on them). In detention one of the five students – Simon (who basically had a Gossip Girl site in app form) goes into anaphylactic shock and winds up dead. The killer spends the next few weeks letting the entire school know what dirty secrets Simon had on the four remaining detention kids. All four of them have reason to want Simon dead but the question is: was it Bronwyn (the brains), Addy (the beauty), Nate (the criminal), or Cooper (the athlete)?
If you can put aside the unrealistic parts of this novel (ex: a murder during a high school detention, four teenagers playing Nancy Drew, etc.) then the core of this novel was pretty good. Another fluff read, but my plate has been so full of things out of my control lately that this was the exact type of YA Mystery/Romance I needed to escape into.
Decent editing (which y’all know I’m a stickler for) and I did like that despite the fact that we have four (five counting Simon) main characters, as well as a handful of minor characters, they each had such distinct voices and personalities that I didn’t have a hard to remembering who was who and which story line belonged to them.
The ending is a bit dramatic but nevertheless, the book served its purpose – it was a nice distraction from the real world!
